For me, Christmas came early this year: I finally managed to get my hands on E! True Hollywood Story: L.A. Law! What a joy! Diana sure has a radiant personality! My favourite moment of the documentary was when she talked about the viewers' reactions to the famous Christmas Scene in 1990: "OOH NOO! NOT HER!". I also loved Jill Eikenberrys commentary about Diana: "We all loved the dynamic between her and Dysart. We were all very sad to see her go". Well Jill: I couldn't agree more! Like I've written a hundred times before: the chemistry between Muldaur and Dysart is the greatest thing that has ever happened to TV! The love and hate story between Rosalind Shays and Leland McKenzie was much too short: there were so many stories left to tell. The L.A. Law cast understood that - why couldn't the producers??

Tonight and next Thursday, the season-long battle between Rosalind Shays and Leland McKenzie on "L.A. Law" (WNBC / 4 at 10) escalates into a full-scale confrontation over who will control the destiny and loyalties at McKenzie, Brackman.

Only one will survive.

Rosalind Shays (played by Diana Muldaur) joined the law firm only this season - L.A. Law's" fourth. Through what certainley seemed like mean-spirited manipulation, she wrested the senior-partner title away from Leland McKenzie (Richard Dysart). Now, McKenzie wants the title back.

In separate interviews yesterday, neither Muldaur nor Dysart would say how the story would be resolved - although early indications are that McKenzie will emerge victorious.

For the season finales, Dysart says, "McKenzie has had to master all his strengths and cunning to confront the force of evil with the force of light."

Whatever the outcome, the emergence of the treacherous, bottom-line-oriented Shays has been the major development on "L.A. Law" this season.

"When I came on the show as Roz," said Muldaur, "I don't think anybody had a clue that the character would be such a big hit. I have to say I was surprised by the reaction - I had no idea people love to hate so much."

There are good reasons for the partners' animosity. She has embarrassed them personally and professionally. She mocked the braces on the teeth of Douglas Brackman (Alan Rachins). She forced McKenzie to wear his hearing aid in order to hear her ridicule him to a client, and went behind the back of Victor Sifuentes (Jimmy Smits) to influence a client.

But Muldaur doesn't see Roz as being that vindictive. "I don't think it is ever Roz' intention to do the others in," she said. "She even has a kind of fondness for them. She doesn't hold grudges. It's just that they just better change their ways.

"Roz is very good at what she does. She's a brilliant lawyer and billiant businesswoman. If a man did what Roz does, he'd be accepted. A woman doing it seems to horrify people."

Nonetheless, viewers have responded to the character. Muldaur said she gets stopped on the street or at restaurants - mostly by lawyers. "When they congratulate me, I wonder what they mean - congratulations on the role and how I'm acting it? Or congratulations on what Roz has done to people at the law firm? I think most people are afraid to say hello, thinking I'd chew their heads off."

Both Muldaur and Dysart said what makes their confrontation so exciting is the quality of writing, which elevates their sparring. "Everybody expects us to yell and scream at one another," says Dysart. "But we're two professional actors with complete trust in each other. We take the words that are in the script and put the meaning into it as understood. We play two professional attorneys who know that the first one who raises their voice loses."

If McKenzie wins the struggle, it presents a problem for the show's writers - what happens to Roz? "They simply can't dump such a great character as Roz after taking a year to build her up," Dysart said. There's no way that Rosalind will be off the show. We're undoubtedly going to confront her as an adversary in court trials."

One possibility is that Roz will head a competing law firm where there can be more high-level battles for clients between herself and McKenzie.

Or...the Roz you love to hate may become a changed woman.

"What we've seen of Rosalind so far is the way she has been written up to now, " Muldaur said. "If they start writing her differently, she can change. People in real life are like that. People whom we perceive initially to be one way turn out to be just the opposite.

"She could really become anything the writers wanted," she added. "She could become a worse person, heaven forbid. Or she could become loyal to the people around her. She could learn through her mistakes. The writers create all this. I think of Rosalind as this wonderful character just beginning her fictional life."

The concert at Nalen yesterday was just as fabulous as I expected it to be. Clare still sings like a goddess, and her songs are some of the best all times. Me and my friends were also very happy to hear that she and her Reasons had eaten at Hermans - twice! That restaurant has a really special place in our hearts.

One of the highlights of the concert was when Clare invited a Swedish guy, Emil Svanängen also known as Loney Dear, up on stage. She called him "Sweden's national treasure" - and he sure proved to be just that! His duet with Clare rocked my world!
Clare performed several of my favorite songs, like Murder They Want Murder, Our Team Is Grand and This Is The Story. I hope that she'll sing How It Should Be, Speak Gently, Under The Water, Cook For You, Sugar In My Hair, Kyoto Nights and Photograph the next time she'll be visiting Stockholm - these songs were terribly missed last night!

My apologies to all Diana fans for not having blogged for so long. I've just come home from L.A., where I had the joy to meet an old collegue of Diana's: Richard Dysart. We had lunch together a couple of times and talked a lot about L.A. Law (of course). I told him that I'll always think that the "Rosalind & Leland story" is the best story written and acted all times. Richard called Diana "a wonderful person".

Anyway: there will be some "new" old Diana quotes and pictures here soon. I'll also write more about Diana's niece, Clare, who will be giving a concert here in Stockholm tonight.

...I had the great pleasure of seeing Geoff Muldaur live again. It had been about 3,5 years since he last visited Stockholm. This time he was accompanied by Jim Kweskin.

Anybody who has seen Geoff Muldaur live knows that it's an experience beyond words. I've said it before: this guy is as great at singing and playing the guitar as his sister is at acting (and that's the biggest compliment I could pay him). His music is ageless and the chemistry between him and Kweskin on stage can't fail. My friends and I had a great night at Stallet, and we can only hope that these two fantastic musicians will return to Stockholm real soon.

Today it's been 18 years since NBC aired "The Christmas Scene" for the very first time. If You People havn't seen that scene yet, You havn't seen anything! Unfortunately I don't own a picture from that episode, so this one will have to do (how could it not do?!).

I know that many fans were upset to discover the affair between Rosalind and Leland, but I certainly wasn't. There's something about that famous scene, and either you get or you don't. It was ranked as the 38th greatest moment in television history, in an issue of EGG magazine. If you ask me, it should have been ranked as the greatest moment of them all!

TOO STRONG FOR BOTH WOMEN AND MEN?

Diana has often described Rosalind Shays as "too strong for a lot of men". But she's also talked about the fact that many women viewers seemed to resent her character's corporate success. Diana once said, in an interview, that she's often run in to ladies who are just horrified at the image of powerful women. She continued: "I don't know why this is. Possibly it's jealousy, or perhaps Rosalind challenges them—that maybe they should be out there doing something, somewhere."

Well well: people can be jealous of Roz if they like to. Personally, I feel sorry for these kinds of people.
I mean: Rosalind Shays is a goddess, who everybody should adore. Why can't people see that???

Info about the author/film writer: Tom Tryon was born in Hartford, Connecticut in 1926. He was an American film and television actor, as well as an author. Disillusioned with acting, Tryon retired from the profession in 1969 and began writing horror, and mystery novels. He was, extremely successful. "Where has Diana Muldaur been all our lives? Right there, on the tee-vee, in one series after another, many of them forgettable, a couple of them hits, but never registering quite so strongly as she has this season as Rosalind Shays, the loved and hated legal eagle on NBC's hit drama L.A. Law.

'Some people really don't want to say hello to me when they see me on the street,' says Muldaur. 'Others say, `Go, Roz! Terrific! Give it to them in the office, and anywhere else!' And I get congratulations. Which I've never gotten before for a part - congratulations! It's mostly lawyers, 'cause they all watch, apparently. Every single one.'

More than lawyers are watching though, and savoring or deploring, or both, the treacherous machinations of the indomitable Roz, a hard-boiled corporate "rainmaker" brought into the firm of McKenzie/Brackman to bolster its finances-much as Muldaur was brought into the cast of L.A. Law to get some dramatic fireworks going. And did she.

'At the end of year three, the firm was a nice close family where everyone trusted each other,' says David E. Kelley, who took over as executive producer this season. 'With Roz, that chemistry changed. The controversy and discontent have generated a lot of heat.'

An ad in next week's TV Guide promoting the May 3rd episode promises 'The Final Battle: Winner Take All!' over a photo of Muldaur nose-to-nose with Dysart. And yet Kelley says the big showdown will occur in the second-to-last episode of the season, airing May 10. A spokesman for 20th Century Fox explains: The big battle is so big it will stretch out over two shows. Many viewers probably assume that Leland McKenzie will be returned to the throne when the dust settles. 'And we more or less assume it here as well,' says Kelley, not wanting to give much away.

Roz is much talked about and bickered about among the show's fans. Roz is despicable and yet delectable, full of intriguing complexities-a sneaky rat one moment, a brave defender of the faith the next. 'I was told that at Harvard Law School, they hiss when she comes on,' says Muldaur. 'They all watch it in a big hall and go ssssssss when Roz comes onto the screen.'

And how does she feel about Roz?

'I don't think she's a terrible person. I think she's a person I wouldn't want to spend any time with, but I'm fascinated by her. When I get a script, I'm horrified each time. I say, `Oh my God! How am I ever going to do that?' And it can take me two days to really work on it, and then I go out and do it. 'I mean-have poor McKenzie put on his hearing aid! Just one thing after another. I say, `Oh, my God!' I'm horrified at first. Just horrified. I'm a very sensitive person, basically.'

Muldaur has almost nothing bad to say about anybody. Except maybe about Star Trek: The Next Generation, a syndicated series that has had beaucoup production problems. 'It wasn't what I expected. I thought it would be wonderfully imaginative and exciting in that way which everybody else thought it would be, but they were having a bad year, and writers were coming in the front door and out the back door and, sadly, jumping out of windows, and it just didn't happen.'

She didn't have to test for the part of Roz. 'No, I went in and met the guys and we had a terrific talk and I went to the mountains and they called me and said, `Come back and try some clothes on, we want to get going on this.'

Whoever Roz is and whatever she represents, she's been great for the show. She's made a terrific series even more terrific. The question is, will she be back next year? 'If you find out, let me know. They have to make up their minds,' says Muldaur, who's been kept in the dark about her fate and Roz's.

Muldaur's crazy about the job. 'I love it,' she says, with a beaming, beatific, very un-Rozzy smile. 'I mean, that's one reason I did it. I get very excited when I see good writing and good acting, and I don't see it that often. So it's just a joy. And they're a joy, the others in the cast. They're wonderful. I think it's because they all love to act and none of them plays The Star. Absolutely not one.'

Told that some viewers would be hurt if Roz doesn't come back, Muldaur says, 'I think Rosalind would be hurt, too. Ha ha ha. I think Roz would be very hurt."

I received a L.A. Law-script the other day! It was faaabulous! It's always fun to read lines that wasn't there when the episode was finished. Like Rosalind's question to Leland: "I don't even understand why Ann Kelsey should be at this meeting?!". I wonder why they didn't keep that line???

Now to the problem: This episode (He's a crowd) was written by David E. Kelley himself (the man that created the fabulous Rosalind Shays-character), and he's spelling it ROS - not ROZ! The whole world seems different to me somehow...

It was winter. 2006. I had just bought the McCloud box. And there she was: Chris Coughlin!

I had, of course, heard of her and read about her. As the "Rosalind Shays freak" and "Muldaur-stalker" I am, I've read about every single character Diana's ever played. And I knew that Chris was one of the 3-4 characters Diana is most famed for. So it was actually a bit scary to start watching McCloud: What would I think of her? Would she remind me of Roz?

I loved Chris immediatly. It's hard not to love her: She's gorgeous in the pilot! And there is dignity (unfortanately I can't say that about all the roles the fabulous Diana Muldaur has done). And I liked Dennis Weaver (unfortanately I can't say that about all her TV/movie co-stars).

But now back to Chris. In a way she reminds me of Roz: There's guts! There's humor! And like I've already said: There's dignity. But there's a big difference between them: Chris seems satisfied with her on-and off romance with Sam (at least most of the time). Roz demands commitment from Leland. But still: Both Chris and Roz are challenging the gender roles. They are not the kind of ladies that need looking after. They are the kind of ladies that have to look after their men (and by that I mean: telling Sam and Leland what to do)...all the time...

Today I heard it for the first time: I was watching her in a guest role on Kung Fu (a really bad show by the way) - and suddenly she started to sing Aurelie. It was sooo beautiful: At some points she almost sounded like her brother - and that's a huge compliment!

You can now buy this movie in a dvd-box called Agatha Christie Classic Mystery Collection. This is one of my favourite Muldaur-movies, and I probably don't have tell you why but I will anyway: Her character in this movie, Angela, looks sooooo much like The One and Only Rosalind Shays! And her clothes are sooooo 80s! And those eyes...

To watch L.A. Law is to love L.A. Law. I was 10 years old when Leland McKenzie (Richard Dysart) entered my life, and 14 when Rosalind Shays (Diana Muldaur) entered the law firm with much fanfare. Seeing those actors/characters together changed my life!!
The "christmas scene", where Rosalind's affair with Leland is discovered, is soooooooo wonderful: I can't stop watching it! It was ranked as the 38th greatest moment in television, in an issue of EGG magazine. It should have been ranked as the greatest moment of them all!

Diana Muldaur (best known for playing Rosalind Shays on L.A. Law) was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1938. She graduated from Sweet Briar College in 1960. She also studied acting with Stella Adler for six months. She started her career as an Shakespearean actress at McCarter Theatre in Princeton. Then she went to Puerto Rico to do winter stock. Back in the U.S. she worked with future L.A. Law co-star, Richard Dysart, at New York's legendary Circle in the Square Theatre. She acted in several Broadway and Off Broadway productions, before moving to Hollywood in 1968. In Hollywood she starred in movies such as The Other, One More Train to Rob, McQ and Beyond Reason. She was a regular/semi-regular on series such as L.A. Law, Born Free, McCloud, Star Trek TNG, The Tony Randall Show, A Year in the Life and The Survivors. She guest-starred in series such as Dr. Kildare, Charlie's Angels, Black Beauty, Mannix, T.H.E. Cat, Star Trek TOS, Cannon, Hawaii Five-O and I Spy. She also starred in many made-for-TV movies, such as Ordeal and Murder in Three Acts.

Diana was on the board for the Screen Actor's Guild and the national chair of their committee on women and minorities in the industry. Later, she became president of the Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Diana is the older sister of singer/songwriter Geoff Muldaur, the ex-sister-in-law of singer Maria Muldaur, and the aunt of singer/songwriter Jenni Muldaur and singer/songwriter Clare Muldaur Manchon (from Clare & The Reasons). She loves dogs and horses, and she's a known breeder of Airdale Terriers.

Diana has been quite candid about her time on Star Trek TNG, and that it wasn't a partiucularly pleasant experience for her (although she's always spoken very fondly of Majel Barrett and Gene Roddenberry) - as opposed to her experience on L.A. Law, which the actress enjoyed immensely. Richard Dysart, who played her enemy/lover on L.A. Law, said in an interview in 1998 that he and Diana have been "good friends for many years". Diana herself has often described the L.A. Law cast as "the closest family".
